Final Film

In this shot I am changing the brightness of the 8mm film clip, enabling me to make the film look like it is from the past and differ it from anything else.

In these shots you can see the 8mm film clip being put on a different layer to the rest of the film, again making it differ from the normal shots.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task I found it difficult to compare the narrative because my film doesn't really include a diegetic part between two specific characters, however I feel that my filming and editing skills have definitely improved in the ways that I can recognise problems or find something that I would like to change and I can now do this and have a much better understanding. Although I edited my preliminary task with Final Cut Pro, I feel that my skills with using the software is now at a much higher level as shown in my final product. My final product also differs from the preliminary task as I have used After Effects which developed my film a lot because I was able to put different layers on top of one another which has to be the main thing that I learnt from the editing process.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During my AS production of this product I have used 'Final Cut Pro', 'SoundTrack Pro', 'Compressor', 'After Effects', 'IMovie', 'Blogger' and 'YouTube' in order for me to edit, create and distribute my film. For example, I wanted to make it look like sections of my film was from the past and in order for me to do this I used 'Final Cut Pro' and the 8mm film clip to put onto a layer which is on top of the film. In order to film my introduction I used a Canon 7D. This was very helpful because the quality of the footage made the opening sequence look well presented. It also allowed me to change aperture and depth of field. The lens I used was a 17-50mm which gave my film a wide vision and I was able to shoot my selected shots without hassle.

1 YouTube - Has been a big help this year, it has helped me watch movies, which have inspired and influenced me with my media product. I knew about YouTube before taking media AS however had never uploaded anything onto the site.

Blogger- With the use of Blogger I have been able to document my year of AS media in a interesting and interactive way. By having it online it has made it easier for my teacher to check my work to see if I am on track. Blogger  allows me to save the posts as drafts, which I can come back to if I am not finished. I can also embed videos from YouTube, images and sound. I had never used a blog since starting media and didn't know how to use it, but I have found it very easy to use and understand.

Final cut Pro- I have used this program a lot during producing my final media product, it is a fast way of editing. I have very much enjoyed using final cut pro during my AS as it is so simple and easy to create very effective media without much hassle at all.

Sound track Pro- I used sound track pro to produce the audio to my final film. It was very easy to find as many different sound effects as you wanted and helped me to produce many different sounds to many different films. It was very easy to use once you knew where everything was.

Compressor – I had never used this program before, however since starting the course I have used it a number of times and found it easier. It reduces the size of the film footage shot to a size that final cut and sound track pro can work with.

After Effects – It is a postproduction program, which you can produce title. I used this to add in my title and create the effect over them, I also used it to make up my production company logo. I was able to-do this with video copilot. I found that the tow programmes are very simple to use when gone through very slowly, however ‘Andrew Kaner’ the man who guides you thought the video copilot when to fast, so you have to keep stoping and starting his movies.

Imovie – This is program which allows you to produce a movie in a easy and quick way. I used imovie to produce videos of feedback interviews and showing the different camera settings .

How did you attract/address your audience?
In order to attract my audience I used youtube annotations which highlighted the way in which my film opening linked with other films with the War genre. My annotations referred to similar genre conventions, use of music similarities with other movies and what I have identified as the unique selling point of my film introduction, as I wanted to attract a similar audience to that of Saving Private Ryan and other films of this genre. I followed the typical conventions that made these types of films successful such as memories from family members of lost ones. As well as this music became a big factor in my film introduction which helped attract my audience.

I used a young boy to help my target audience relate to the film as my target audience are most likely to have grandchildren, so the use of a younger man will help with the emotion of the film. I would do this so that they could also compare this to life back then and this is what I would want the audience to feel compassion towards the main protagonist.

    Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

To begin with I wanted my film to be watched by men and women over the age of 60 because this is the type of age that I thought would enjoy war films. However, after interviewing my Granny and hearing her opinions, which were 'I don't think that many women my age want to watch war films. Personally I would never go and see another one because the first one I saw, I had to leave because I didn't want to see what really happened to my dad and grandfather, and also women don't really like all the blood and guts of war films.' After hearing this I decided to change my target audience to men only over the age of 60. I interviewed two different men, Jack Howard and Simon Dufty, and this enabled me to get an insight into what the men wanted to get out of watching a war film.

Having had my two target audience interviewers watch my media product I have asked them what they think of it.

Jack- What do you think of my produced product?
I think that your media product includes many of the elements of a war film. For example, the use of final picture gives the audience an insight into what has happened in the past and shows us what we are going to see next and I find that this had a very deep effect on me and made me want to watch more. I also feel that in having a voice over you have really captivated the audience and I would be very happy to watch the rest of your film.

Simon- What do you think of my produced product?
I find that your media product ticks all of the boxes of a period war film as in there you have facts on what people went through at home and also how people had to cope out in war. Personally, the use of the young boy is very effective as it shows the point of view of a younger generation of war and I find that this is very easy to relate to.

    Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

With my film being a period war genre I would want it to be represented through a company that has already produced a war film, so that they have the experience to know what publicity I would need.

On the left are my production company idents and on the right are the logos from Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan has two different production companies in order for them to have the most up to date equipment for the film. This is also the reason I would have three different ones. However, Saving Private Ryan was sent straight to the cinema and as I would not have the funds I would want my film to be downloaded. This would save money and at the same time give people different options on how they would want to watch the movie.
DreamWorks Animation SKG creates high-quality family entertainment, including computer-generated (CG) animated feature films, television specials and series and live entertainment properties. With world-class creative talent and technological capabilities, DreamWorks Animation releases two or three CG animated feature films a year that deliver great stories, breathtaking visual imagery and a sensibility that appeals to both children and adults. If I were to use DreamWorks productions to produce my film I would have the right people as they have already produced a war film so they would know what kind of publicity I would need. However, I would feel as though their audiences may been a little different to what I would want for my film as I would not want children to watch my film.

In addition, the Studio will continue to release a number of films under the DW label. Paramount also has established distribution deals with iconic comic book creator, Marvel Entertainment and renowned animated film producer, DreamWorks Animation.
I would want my film to be represented by this production company as they had had experience is producing war films and also they have many different connections so my film would be able to be distributed through different companies, with a range of experience.

    Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In order for me to evaluate how social groups are represented in my media product I compared my main character to other similar character roles of films with the same genre as my main protagonist. For example, the role of "Ryan" in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" is very similar to my main protagonist. I do feel that the films would attract the same audience, even though there is an age difference I feel that having a younger protagonist is easier to relate to as it reveals the harsh truth of the younger member of the war.

The similar trades in the films, are that we see a older man remember his time in the war and see the war happening. I decided to have my film opening from the point of view of a woman in war times as this would attract more woman than a male point of view therefore, differing to "Saving Private Ryan."

As I didn't have the facilities to be able to film a war scene I filmed my characters running over a bank and having a voice over. I feel that the voice over enables the audience to envision something happening rather than actually watching it, which can be very effective as the audience have to use their imagination. Similarly, in doing this I have enabled the older women to come and watch this as when interviewing my granny she said that she wouldn't want to watch all the blood and bomb scenes.
